Health Curriculum

[What I contemplated submitting to the local school district in response to their request for a description of my home school health curriculum]

Health

Text:    Dinnertime Conversations, by The Mr. and Mrs., M Family Inc., 2013.  Topics covered include:

  • Twinkies – what they are, why they will kill you
  • McDonald's Restaurants – avoid them like the plague (plus, the toys are overrated)
  • real food vs. fake food and how to know the difference
  • fats and calories and why homemade blueberry muffins are so dang good 
  • table manners and why we need them
  • T.V. will rot your brain and sitting in the house all day long rots your body
  • Barney Fife – what can we learn? 
  • you're not hungry, you're just bored
  • how to make yogurt and bread from scratch 
  • self-esteem – how much is too much?
  • teamwork strategies, or, stop yelling at your brother so much!
  • the value of a clean bedroom with all the Playmobil off the floor
  • bath night – dirty elbows, smelly toes and what to do about them
  • plaque, the dentist and you 
  • loose teeth – wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!! 
  • picking up trash for fun and profit  
  • money, money money – American Girl Dolls and Legos are not all you need to be happy 
  • basic first aid:  boo boos, bruises, and band aids 
  • home safety: don't play with lit candles or put your soup on your head
  • tissues: the best place to wipe a runny nose
  • Who's the boss around here?  Family dynamics and the way things work best at our house
  • the great gift of our amazing bodies and minds

  2. Hope this 'text' is available when I next have to formally teach health! I would add "Fruit snacks: not really fruit (even the *natural* ones)". I have a feeling J wouldn't believe me anyway.
